If you’re reading this, you’re probably already delaying that 1000 word essay that’s due by midnight. Don’t worry, we’re in the same boat.
If you find yourself constantly completing assignments or studying at the very last minute, it could be because:
A) You can’t concentrate.
You’re halfway through an extremely boring, dull, monotonous (*inserts other adjectives*) read. You mentally and emotionally prepare yourself to endure the next paragraph when you notice a notification pop up on your phone.
“it’s okay to check my phone, I deserve a break”. That’s a lie. You’ve only studied for 15 minutes.
Before you know it, you’ve already spent three hours in a black-hole called Youtube watching people eat 10 packets of instant noodles. How are Mukbang videos so entertaining?
What to do:
The number one form of distraction is usually your phone, so what I like to do is place mine really far away from where I’m studying. So, for example, if I’m studying upstairs in my room, I’ll put my phone all the way downstairs.
B) You have no motivation to start.
Your project is due in 12 hours, yet you still don’t feel any sense of urgency because you simply just have zero motivation to do ANYTHING. That’s relatable. Trying to start an assignment when you don’t even know where to begin is definitely a huge motivation-drainer.
What to do:
The key to staying motivated is to get rid of barriers that are hindering you from starting in the first place. For example, if you find it difficult to start the ball rolling on your essay, it helps to just write the first sentence. It can be the most nasty, broken English sentence you’ve ever written, but starting will help you get into the groove of working.
C) You thrive under pressure.
I definitely fall under this category. I find myself producing the best content when I have very limited time on hand. Because of this, my motto for the whole of last year was: ‘The due date is the do date’. If you have the same mentality, you would also know how much stress you have to go through trying to submit an assignment with just 5 minutes to spare. You’re probably also a master at speed typing.
What to do:
Although you may work best under pressure, the stress and panicking that comes along with it may cause you to burn out in the semesters to come. To get rid of your last minute mindset, you need to reprogram your body. Set a date where you will, by hook or by crook, finish at least half of the assignment. And no, a day before the due date does not count!
At the end of the day, if you still can’t shake the shackles of procrastination off, just do what you can to get sh** done. Besides, it doesn’t matter how long you take to complete an assignment as long as you hand it in on time, right? 😉
You should stop procrastinating.
Or at least try to. 😀
