Meet the greens, the GRN club! This week’s #ChasingMonashians features Catherine, the president of GRN. Learn more about this long-standing club and (also, but not exclusively) Catherine’s Top 10 Songs!
What your club is about?
Our club is all about preserving the environment. Established in 2010, our main aim is to promote greener practices within the Monash Malaysia campus as well as to educate students on the importance of preserving the environment. However, we are under OHSE instead of MUSA.
Club name origin?
GRN stands for Green Representative Network. We represent the student body who are willing to contribute to a greener campus – and to a larger extent – to our society.
Did you get your hands colourful to support the cause?
Who are the main committee? What is your role in the club?
I am the president of this club. Birahgahtish Mariappan is the vice president. Kevin Surya Permana is the secretary, while Janice Saw is the treasurer. Nashvinder Singh is our publicity manager.
Any challenges of being the president?
It’s challenging at first, because there are deadlines for proposals, managing events in general are quite challenging, and also I have to ensure that there is a good communication between the club and its supervisor, committees, sub-committees and also members.
Your stance on environmental problems in Malaysia?
Malaysia, much like the rest of the world, is facing environmental problems such as deforestation, water pollution, air pollution etc. I feel that as members of the society, we have to do our part in preserving the Mother Earth.
They hiked to see a waterfall. And it was worth it.
See what I mean?
What can we do as students to contribute in saving the environment?
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle; anytime, anywhere. Even small efforts would be appreciated; such as reducing the use of paper, reducing food wastage, turning off the tap and switch off the light when not in use, and taking the stairs instead of the elevator.
Clean the beach, but stay clean.
Events done by the club?
Some of the previous events included tree planting, beach cleaning, waterfall trip, building a butterfly garden in Monash campus, Earth Week and recycling.
Remember the butterfly garden?
If only they knew that the garden didn’t survive…
