“Is painting supposed to be stress-inducing or therapeutic?”

A question running rampant in my mind throughout the entire night, along with a couple of mild profanities as my drawing skills were being put to the test in replicating a beautiful acrylic painting, which I promptly obliterated.

This social painting event, entitled “Brew n Brush”, allows participants to paint an acrylic drawing from scratch on a blank canvas. Accompanied by an array of alcoholic (and non-alcoholic) beverages, an experienced instructor leads the participants to replicate a painting. This entire event took place in 2 hours; with most of my time being spent on looking over at the instructor’s painting and desperately trying to correct my own rookie mistakes. The theme on the day I attended was the Red Umbrella. This was the 2nd run of the event.

I attended Brew n Brush with a high-school friend of mine, Hannah. None of us were gifted in the drawing department, unfortunately. Our conversation throughout the night involved lots of questioning of artistic talent and whether we’ve accidentally dipped our brushes into our drinks instead of paint water. The instructor was very friendly and encouraging to all of us participants. She took the time to look at each of our painting and let us know which parts were really good and which could use some improvements. When we were drawing the main figures, some participants moved away entirely from the entire theme of Red Umbrella and drew abstracts of animals and even superheroes.

All in all, it was an amazing event that was expertly coordinated and everyone had a good time, with the occasional giggle and panicked screaming when someone made a mistake. It was a great introduction to acrylic painting for us newbies. Whether you want to spend time with friends over a couple of drinks, or just want to attend to try your hand at painting (or even both), this event is a great opportunity to do so!
